There is growing evidence that being outside in a garden and nature can make a difference to your quality of life if you are living with dementia. You may have noticed that you are not going outside so often, or gardening less than you would like. Maybe it’s hard to shop for plants, plan what garden tasks to do. A loss of confidence, feeling tired or being less physically strong might make it feel too much.
Gardening can connect us with scent, sound, sight, and touch, all of which can be linked to memories. Gardening can encourage optimism and hope for the future by looking forward to favourite flowers blooming and fruits ripening. Perhaps most importantly, gardening can also be a wonderful way of simply enjoying the moment and pushing worries away.
Evergreen offers a flexible 1:1 gardening support service which can be adapted to suit your needs. A plan would be fully discussed and agreed with you, family, carers, or anyone with power of attorney as appropriate. This would respect your interests and choices while considering wellbeing and safety.
You may just want to be outside and chatting while the gardening is done, or you may like to be more directly involved in activities such as seed sowing, planting up hanging baskets or designing borders. Other indoor craft activities such planting bulbs in teacups or making bird feeders can be enjoyed in poor weather.
